Volunteers help restore West Linn white oaks
November rains made for muddy work, but didn't dampen spirits as more than 100 volunteers devoted over 1,700hours to restoring native oak woodland sat Camassia Natural Area in West Linn. Once characteristic of the Willamette Valley, Camassia's wooded habitats gained some much-needed breathing room with the removal, by hand, of 200 Douglas-firs that had encroached and were overshadowing the oaks. Resulting firewood was donated to local charities. "We're incredibly thankful for how community members and students from several high schools, Multnomah Youth Cooperative, Cascade Education Corps, the Northwest Service Academy and Metro all contributed to the effort," said Jason Dumont, Portland area preserves steward.
